UK Defence Innovation is inviting proposals across five urgent operational challenge areas, with contracts of up to £1 million available for technologies that can reach deployment scale within 12 months of project completion.
UK Defence Innovation has launched Cycle 8 of its Innovation Support to Operations competition, inviting innovators from across UK industry and academia to submit proposals with a clear and credible route to operational deployment. The competition closes at 12:00 midday on 22 September 2026, with funding decisions expected in December and successful projects targeting a January 2027 start.
The programme’s operating principle is direct: deliver useful technology into service faster than adversaries. Projects funded through Innovation Support to Operations are expected to reach Technology Readiness Level 6 within four months – demonstrating performance in representative operational environments – and must show a credible pathway to scaled manufacture and deployment within 12 months of contract completion. This is not a research programme or a proof-of-concept fund. UKDI is looking for innovations that can move from demonstration into real-world operational use at pace and at scale, and proposals that cannot show that pathway will not progress.
Cycle 8 is focused on five challenge areas where novel technologies could deliver immediate operational impact. Counter-UAS interceptor sensors address the growing requirement for detection and engagement solutions capable of keeping pace with the proliferating drone threat. One-way attack UAS seekers reflect the operational lessons of Ukraine and other recent conflicts, where attritable, low-cost strike capability has demonstrated decisive battlefield effect. Platform survivability covers technologies that reduce the vulnerability of crewed and uncrewed systems to the threats they are increasingly likely to encounter in contested environments. Telemetry data communications targets the resilient, high-bandwidth data links that autonomous and remotely operated systems depend on to function effectively under operational conditions. Maritime autonomous navigation addresses the growing demand for reliable, assured navigation capability for uncrewed surface and subsurface vessels operating in complex and potentially denied environments.
The five areas are not arbitrary – they align directly with UKDI’s recently published thematic framework and reflect the operational priorities identified across the National Armaments Director Group, the part of UK defence responsible for developing, delivering and sustaining the national arsenal. For companies that have been tracking UKDI’s strategic direction, the alignment between the competition’s challenge areas and the broader autonomous systems, counter-UAS and maritime investment priorities signalled at Farnborough and in the Defence Investment Plan is clear and deliberate.
Projects are expected to cost no more than £350,000, though proposals up to £1 million excluding VAT will be considered. The competition is open to UK-registered businesses, sole traders and academic institutions undertaking project activity within the UK. UKDI is actively supporting collaboration between organisations through a dedicated collaboration survey, helping innovators identify complementary expertise and potential partners before submission. Projects selected for funding will receive support from UKDI project managers, technical partners and military stakeholders throughout delivery – a structured support offer that distinguishes the programme from a straightforward grant competition.
