AtkinsRéalis, a global engineering and nuclear services firm, has entered into a strategic teaming agreement with Anduril UK to accelerate the development and deployment of sovereign autonomous aircraft for the British Armed Forces.

This collaboration, announced on 17 February 2026, focuses on addressing the regulatory, safety, and assurance challenges inherent in fielding next-generation uncrewed aviation systems. By combining AtkinsRéalis’ expertise in aerospace platform certification and cyber security with Anduril UK’s software-defined autonomous capabilities, the partnership aims to provide the Ministry of Defence (MoD) with trusted, “commanded, not controlled” systems that align with the technological priorities established in the recent Strategic Defence Review (SDR).

For the UK defence supply chain, the agreement signifies a critical shift toward establishing domestic manufacturing and assurance frameworks for autonomous technology. A core component of the collaboration involves AtkinsRéalis supporting Anduril UK in the establishment of a dedicated UK-based manufacturing facility for uncrewed platforms. This facility is intended not only to meet the immediate requirements of the British Armed Forces but also to serve as a strategic hub for potential exports to the European market. Such a development offers significant opportunities for sub-contractors and infrastructure specialists, as AtkinsRéalis leverages its experience in complex industrial facilities to bolster the sovereign industrial base and create high-skilled jobs.

Navigating the complex regulatory environment remains a primary hurdle for autonomous innovation within the aerospace sector. The partnership will work closely with the Military Aviation Authority (MAA) and the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to develop proportionate assurance standards that enable rapid innovation without compromising rigorous safety protocols. This includes managing Defence Lines of Development (DLODs) to ensure that autonomous platforms are operationally assured and fully deployable. For businesses looking to enter this sub-sector, the emphasis on cyber security and established certification pathways provides a clearer roadmap for the integration of novel technologies into the UK’s frontline inventory.

The collaboration also underscores the increasing importance of “software-first” approaches in modern defence procurement. Anduril UK’s focus on software-defined capabilities, paired with AtkinsRéalis’ deep domestic expertise – supported by a UK-based workforce of 2,000 defence specialists – reflects a broader government policy to maintain a technological edge through agile, sovereign partnerships. As the UK continues to modernise its military aviation, this teaming agreement establishes a robust framework for delivering autonomous capabilities at pace, fostering national economic growth and strengthening strategic autonomy in the aerospace and defence sectors.
