The NATO Deputy Secretary General, Radmila Shekerinska took part in the recent Riga Conference in Latvia, joining Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže and Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide for a panel on diplomacy in a changing security environment.
Ms. Shekerinska stressed that Russia’s war against Ukraine and its campaign of hostile actions against Allies had only reinforced NATO unity.
She said: “We will not be intimidated and we will continue our support to Ukraine…” adding that Latvia was a great example of this by dedicating 0.25% of its GDP to the support of Ukraine. The Deputy Secretary General also pointed to Baltic Air Policing, Baltic Sentry and Eastern Sentry as examples of united responses, with Allies committing forces to further strengthen security along NATO’s eastern flank.
Earlier on in the day, Ms. Shekerinska visited the Ādaži Military Base, where she visited NATO’s multinational brigade and received a briefing from Major General Ulrich Essemann-Beck, Commander of NATO Multinational Division Headquarters North.
The Deputy Secretary General also held bilateral meetings, including with Latvian Defence Minister Raivis Melnis, Foreign Minister Baiba Braže and Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide. She also met with German Parliamentary State Secretary Sebastian Hartmann and Latvia’s National Security Adviser, Ilze Milta.
