4. Description: The awarding authority wishes to establish a contract for the provision of Veterinary Services for all dogs and livestock cared for by NIPS. NIPS have approximately 44 dogs (German/Belgian Shepherds and Labrador/Spaniel breed types) in service across the three establishments, either in a working capacity or in training or companion dogs. Prison dogs are a huge asset to the Prison service. NIPS train dogs to detect drugs, explosives and firearms. Dogs have been used to detect drugs, explosives and firearms in Northern Ireland Prisons since 1975. Both ‘passive’ and ‘active’ drugs dogs are used in Northern Ireland Prisons. A passive drugs dog helps to search people – prisoners and visitors plus staff at the prison. The NIPS also has a range of livestock; including sheep, goats, pigs, fowl and caged birds across the three establishments. Please refer to Specification of Requirements for further information.
