DPRTE 2020 Partner, the Submarine Delivery Agency, has released its first Annual Report and Accounts as progress continues on the Dreadnought and Astute programmes.

The SDA was established in March 2018 to strengthen the procurement and in-service support of nuclear-powered submarines by setting up a new delivery organisation to manage the United Kingdom’s (UK) submarine Programme. Its Annual Report and Accounts sets out the performance of the agency in its first year of operation.

The report states that the Dreadnought submarine programme is within budget and the First of Class vessel, HMS Dreadnought, remains on schedule to enter service in the early 2030s.

The SDA is responsible for the delivery of the Dreadnought programme, which will ensure that the UK has a credible, independent and capable nuclear deterrent out to the 2060s and beyond.

Significant progress has also been made in the building, system integration and testing of the four remaining Boats of the seven Astute class attack submarines.

Work has begun on a programme to manage and to dispose of the twenty submarines now decommissioned from Royal Naval service and to provide arrangements for a further seven submarines as part of future decommissioning activity.

The report also highlights the successful deployment of a technical solution for ‘Stage One’ dismantling on a demonstrator submarine, SWIFTSURE, with work underway on a second submarine, RESOLUTION.

Another highlight for SDA is the creation a Supply Chain Team responsible for the analysis of the supplier base and the strategy to support its complex and highly specialist supply chain and take forward initiatives that deliver improvements.

New contracts have been awarded for the support, advice and material required to ensure the continued safety and availability of the nuclear propulsion systems onboard the current submarine fleet.

There have also been efforts to strengthen partnerships with BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce to deliver submarine build programmes.

SDA will feature at the DPRTE 2020 Equipment and Supplies Pavilion alongside other participants such as DE&S, MOD, Royal Navy, RAF and the British Army.

The Pavilion will provide visitors with an unrivalled opportunity to engage directly with key procurement organisations, such as DE&S, that are responsible for setting procurement strategy and delivering the MOD’s annual procurement spend of over £20 billion.

For MOD and wider public sector personnel engaged within the delivery of procurement, the Pavilion will bring together key organisations, providing a unique networking opportunity. In addition, the Pavilion offers the chance to share and explore the ideas and best practice that are actively supporting and developing current objectives and initiatives.

In his statement in the report, Rob Holden, SDA Chair, wrote: “Our role is not just to work with our industry partners to provide outputs on which the men and women of the Royal Navy rely, but to lead a high-performing industrial enterprise to deliver these capabilities safely and securely and with the value-for-money and cost efficiency that taxpayers demand.

“We have made significant progress over the twelve months, performing well against our Key Performance Indicators.

“We have also made further commitments to the build of the new Dreadnought and Astute submarines, at the same time as ensuring the sustainment of Continuous at Sea Deterrent and other operational requirements, through support to the in-service fleet of Vanguard, Trafalgar and Astute classes.”
