The MOD has appointed Mark Russell CBE as the new chair of Defence Equipment & Support.

The role will begin in November of this year with Mark Russell CBE leading the Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) board providing leadership for the programmes under the group and will be accountable to MOD Ministers. The DE&S functions as the MOD’s organisation designed to equip and provide strategic support for the armed forces.

The acquisition organisation covers a number of interconnected organisations that support the UK military. Mark previously held the position of Chief Executive of UK Government Investments, the government’s group for Corporate Finance and Corporate Governance.

Mark Russell CBE said: “I am delighted to be appointed to the role of Chair of DE&S. I am greatly looking forward to working with the DE&S team, and with MOD colleagues, to continue the important work of maximising value and efficiencies across defence and in partnering more effectively with private sector suppliers.”

Sir Stephen Lovegrove, MOD Permanent Secretary, said: “I am delighted to welcome Mark to the role of DE&S Chair. He has extensive experience across both the private sector and government and I look forward to working with him on equipping Defence to meet the threats of today and in the future.”

Mark has previous experience in corporate finance across both the public and the private sector including six years at UK Government Investments. His new role will involve strategic leadership ensuring the Armed Forces are well supported and functioning as non-executive chair over the 12,500 civilian and military staff within the acquisition board.
