DASA and the Bank of England have launched a market exploration to fund new ideas for banknote security.

The Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA) and the Bank of England have launched a market exploration to find new banknote security ideas that they can develop. The organisations will be looking for existing ideas that can be included in banknotes as new security features.

The Bank of England is seeking novel new ideas to improve security on top of current features such as holographic foils and different coloured inks that can be verified by a retailer. They are seeking ideas for future notes that go beyond current features such as lenticular lenses to prevent counterfeit.

Proposals should include security technologies that are:

  • difficult to counterfeit or simulate
  • easy and intuitive to use for the public
  • easy to communicate
  • durable
  • compatible with high volume printing techniques; representing good value for money with a high production yield
  • suitable for integration into a banknote design.

The funding is open to any organisation that can provide scientific evidence for the effectiveness of any innovation. They are not looking for paper reviews or any improvements on technologies that currently exist in UK notes.

Entries should provide details of one product/capability per innovation outline, multiple ideas will require the submission of multiple forms. As it is not a competition ideas do not need to be costed and draft financials are adequate.

Innovations can be submitted through an application form available on the government website. Submissions will close on 31/03/2020 and those entering will have to create an account on the Enterprise Collaboration Service.
