His Royal Highness The Duke of Cambridge has visited RAF Coningsby in his role as the Honorary Air Commandant to the Station.

During the event the Duke visited 29 Squadron and spoke with personnel who fly and maintain the world-class Typhoon aircraft, including trainee pilots learning to fly the aircraft.

The Duke then opened the new RAF Coningsby Engagement facility where he met children from local primary schools and took part in a STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) activity. The school children were challenged with creating a device that would allow an egg to be dropped from a height without breaking. The Duke judged their efforts and presented certificates to the winning school children.

The Duke then joined RAF personnel for lunch in the Officer’s Mess before watching the 2018 Typhoon Display pilot Flight Lieutenant Jim Peterson practice his routine for the upcoming season.

Station Commander Coningsby, Group Captain Mike Baulkwill said: “It has once again been our great privilege and honour to welcome the Duke of Cambridge to Royal Air Force Coningsby.

“In this year when we mark the Royal Air Forces 100th birthday, I am absolutely delighted that our people have had an opportunity to demonstrate to His Royal Highness how we commemorate those who have gone before, how we celebrate everything the RAF stands for and achieves, and how we are inspiring the next generation to be the best they can possibly be.”

In the afternoon the Duke visited other station personnel and had the opportunity to fly a Typhoon Simulator in the Typhoon Training Facility.
