Saab ship control systems specified for Australian Collins class submarines

Saab has signed a contract with ASC to supply enhanced Integrated Ship Control Management and Monitoring Systems (ISCMMS) to four of the Royal Australian Navy’s Collins class submarines.

Valued at AU$24.2 million, the ISCMMS contract will improve manoeuvring capabilities while integrating management of the submarines propulsion and power generation systems. The improvement programme will also see Saab revamp crucial hardware and spare parts to address issues of obsolescence and ensure the Royal Australian Navy’s competitive edge in the region.

“Saab Australia carried out design, software and hardware development work for the updated ISCMMS during the first stage of the project and this contract acknowledges the success of that work, rolling out the upgrades to the remaining submarines in the fleet,” said Andy Keough, Managing Director of Saab Australia. “Saab’s design and production work has been carried out in Australia involving over 50 Saab and local subcontractor staff.”

Phase I of the improvement programme saw Saab deliver the updated ISCMMS to ASC – Australia’s Collins class prime contractor. Already, the system has been incorporated into HMAS Collins, with HMAS Waller scheduled for later on in the year.

“We look forward to working closely with Saab to complete the final phase of this major upgrade programme,” added Stuart Whiley, Chief Executive Officer of ASC. “This project demonstrates the high level of local industry content and collaboration in supporting Australia’s sovereign submarine capability, the Collins Class fleet.”

ASC will integrate the new system into the remaining submarines during 2019 as and when they complete their maintenance cycles.
