BAE Systems has racked up two US Navy contracts in quick succession, worth a combined $54.8M, to modernise both the amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6) and the guided missile cruiser USS Cape St. George (CG 71).

According to BAE Systems, the lucrative contracts include options that – if exercised – would increase their cumulative value to $62.2M.

Commissioned in October 2014, the USS America will benefit from a programme of hull, mechanical and electrical maintenance, in addition to flight deck modifications in support of the F-35 Lightning II.

Modernisation of the 844ft ship is anticipated to begin in March 2018 with completion earmarked for the end of the year.

Meanwhile, the USS Cape St. George – which entered into service in June 1993 – is to receive a raft of alterations including the replacement of critical aluminium structures and removal of now obsolete equipment.

The 567ft vessel will also kick-off its upgrade in March, though the comprehensive upgrade is likely to stretch into early 2019.

“These contracts are important to expanding the service lives and capability of these Navy ships,” said David Thomas, Vice President and General Manager of BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair.

“Our work on board the America will keep the ship ready for immediate service. For the Cape St. George, it is the beginning of a four-year journey toward full modernization and the ability to serve in the fleet longer.”
