A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been agreed, linking Thales to the Defence Technology Institute (DTI) – the research and development arm of the Thai Ministry of Defence.

The move will enable the two organisations to collaborate on matters relating to Integrated Air Defence Systems, Digital Communications, and Command and Control Systems.

It is hoped that the MoU, penned at Defence & Security 2017, will allow for a more partnered approach when exploring radar integration, providing the Thai Armed Forces with the very best air defence capabilities.

“We hope this MoU will strengthen our collaboration and extend our support to Thailand’s ambition of building world-class defence capabilities within the country,” said Tommy Ayouty, Country Director for Thales in Thailand.

Thailand is currently investigating growth through innovation, technology, research and development, and creative thinking, via its ‘Thailand 4.0’ initiative. In doing so, the DTI hopes to better develop Thailand’s defence technology capabilities, galvanizing the local defence supply chain in the process.

Against this backdrop, Thailand now finds itself reliant on industry partners like Thales to drive collaboration and exchange around digital technologies.

Already, Thales has established long-term relationships with local industrial partners, having set up several expert Thailand-based teams to offer on-the-ground operational support to various projects with the Thai Armed Forces.

The MoU also paves the way for the future transfer of technology and knowledge to Thailand’s burgeoning defence sector.
