Over 200 school children have taken part in a showcase of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) activities. The event at the Glasgow Science Centre marked the start of the RAF100 Youth & STEM programme in Scotland.

RAF100 is a major campaign to celebrate the Centenary of the Royal Air Force. The campaign will run from late 2017 to September 2018, to commemorate and celebrate our first 100 years and to inspire the Service men and women of tomorrow.

The new programme is the foundation to the RAF building interest in STEM-based careers among young people. Helping to ensure that the UK has a highly skilled workforce of the future.

Curriculum-based STEM days will be delivered across the UK by RAF personnel, who volunteer as STEM Ambassadors in their spare time. This extensive programme also includes robotics and engineering competitions, residential courses and sponsoring a new aerospace badge for the Scouts.

The children attending the event have had a small taster of the STEM activity days. From getting to grips with the physics of parachuting to contributing to a giant educational colouring wall designed by Dr Kerry Baker from Leeds University.

The RAF’s most senior officer in Scotland, Air Vice-Marshal Ross Paterson hosted representatives from education and specialist STEM organisations from across Scotland and the UK. He said: “Today we have launched an exciting programme of events to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) in Scotland. This event is about showcasing the importance of STEM and promoting the expansion of our schools’ outreach programme. We have worked hard to foster relationships with a number of external partners such as Education Scotland to help ensure a highly skilled workforce can meet challenges in the future

“This is the first of many events in the build-up to the Centenary of the Royal Air Force. We are committed to using this unique opportunity to inspire the next generation in Scotland by growing their interest in Science and innovation”.
