About the buyer:
Stretching from Reading and Heathrow in the west across to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east, Crossrail ? which will be known as the Elizabeth line from 2018 – will change the way people travel around London and the south east.
When the railway fully opens it will represent a much-needed increase in central London?s rail capacity by over 10 per cent. It will serve 40 stations, with up to 24 trains per hour in each direction, giving some 1.5 million people better access to the jobs and opportunities of London?s main employment centres, and adding an estimated #42bn to the UK economy.
A fleet of brand new 200 metre long trains will run on the line, featuring nine walk-through carriages, air conditioning, CCTV and audible and visual customer information. Lifts are being installed at all stations along the route, transforming transport access for disabled people and those with mobility needs.
The awarding authority is recognised as one of the best performing rail operators in the world. The awarding authority vision is to deliver excellent services which connect and help communities grow.
In July 2014 Transport for London (TfL) announced that awarding authority had been awarded the Crossrail Train Operating Concession. This is an eight year contract that can be extended to ten years.
Crossrail services started running between Liverpool Street and Shenfield on 31 May 2015, taking over the stopping services formerly operated by Abellio Greater Anglia. These services are operating with the current rolling stock under the TfL Rail brand, from 2017 new Crossrail trains will enter into service. Following on from these initial Liverpool Street to Shenfield services, additional services will be introduced as follows:
Heathrow to Paddington (mainline platforms) – May 2018 (when awarding authority takes over the Heathrow Connect service)
Paddington (Elizabeth line platforms) to Abbey Wood – December 2018.
Paddington (Elizabeth line platforms) to Shenfield – May 2019.
By December 2019 there will be a full through service that includes services to Reading and the Elizabeth line will serve 40 stations and run 118 km (72 miles) from Reading and Heathrow to Shenfield and Abbey Wood.
