The Ministry of Defence has launched a new, transformational Veterans Strategy, the first in seven years, aimed at renewing the government’s commitment to the UK’s 1.8 million veterans. The strategy is underpinned by significant new funding, including a £27 million tranche for local support centres and a £12 million fund dedicated to veteran housing, creating a more coordinated national support network.
Central to the strategy is the establishment of VALOUR, a £50 million programme designed to create a network of recognised local support centres across the country. The government has now opened bidding for the first £27 million of this fund, inviting local organisations to apply. These centres, scheduled to open from spring 2026, will serve as a single point of contact for veterans, improving access to essential services such as health, housing, and employment support. The network will be coordinated by a new VALOUR headquarters within the Ministry of Defence, supported by regional centres and field officers operating directly in communities.
In addition to the VALOUR initiative, the strategy commits £12 million to the Reducing Veteran Homelessness programme. This will extend the Op FORTITUDE service, which has already provided housing for over 1,000 veterans, placing it on a sustainable three-year footing. This measure is intended to fulfil the government’s pledge to ensure housing is available for former service personnel at risk of or experiencing homelessness.
Developed in conjunction with the Strategic Defence Review and the Armed Forces Covenant, the new strategy is built on three core priorities: celebrating the contribution of veterans, harnessing their skills for the benefit of the economy and national security, and ensuring effective support is available where needed. The approach recognises veterans as national assets and has been informed by contributions from veterans themselves, as well as public, private, and third-sector organisations. The strategy applies UK-wide, representing a shared endeavour between the UK government and devolved administrations. The Confederation of Service Charities (Cobseo) has welcomed the strategy, highlighting its role in enabling the Armed Forces Community to be both valued and supported by society.
