The Aerospace Technology Institute has launched a competition to find new aerospace design ideas.

The government is investing £3.9billion into the UK Aerospace Research and Technology (UKART) programme, including a new competition seeking aerospace design innovations. Entrants can win a share of £150million and can apply for funding if their projects are selected.

The funding and UKART are managed by a partnership between government and industry as well as Innovate UK, the Aerospace Technology Institute, and the Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy. The competition will provide funding for industrial research or capital investment projects that meet the goals of the UK Aerospace Technology Strategy.

Project themes detailed in the UK Aerospace Technology Strategy include:

  • improving UK whole-aircraft design and system integration
  • future-proofing advanced systems technologies in the UK – specifically, smart, connected and more electric aircrafts
  • securing the UK’s world-leading position in large, complex aviation structures, particularly wings
  • developing more efficient propulsion technologies, including large turbofans.

The competition will officially open on 9 September this year and close on 25 September. It is open to UK businesses, academic organisations, and research and technology groups and all can be project leads depending on the type of idea submitted.

Businesses could win up to 70% of costs for industry-led research projects or 50% of expenses for capital investment projects. A briefing will be held online on 16 September to allow interested parties to discuss projects and more information, including a full list of competition themes, is available on the ATI website with information and application forms available on the government website.
