SatVu, the UK-based thermal intelligence company, has secured a £30 million funding round, bringing its total equity investment to £60 million.

This capital injection is intended to accelerate the transition from single-satellite demonstration to the deployment of a multi-satellite constellation, providing persistent, round-the-clock thermal imaging for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) applications. The funding round was supported by a strategic investment from the NATO Innovation Fund (NIF), alongside the British Business Bank’s Space Frontiers Fund II and established defence prime Lockheed Martin. For the UK defence supply chain, this development marks a significant advancement in sovereign space-based capabilities and offers new opportunities for data integration and infrastructure monitoring.

The capital will primarily fund the expansion of SatVu’s constellation, with HotSat-2 and HotSat-3 scheduled for orbit in 2026. Additionally, the company has confirmed that HotSat-4 and HotSat-5, along with long-lead elements for HotSat-6, are now under contract. By scaling to a constellation, SatVu aims to increase revisit frequency, allowing government and defence customers to monitor operational readiness and track heat signatures associated with critical infrastructure and military supply chains. This “Activity Intelligence” provides a data layer previously unavailable through traditional commercial sensors, enabling the detection of covert movements and operational changes regardless of light conditions.

Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry Luke Pollard noted that the investment follows an earlier Defence Innovation Loan awarded through the Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA), now part of UK Defence Innovation. This government-backed support has acted as a catalyst for private investment, highlighting the Ministry of Defence’s commitment to scaling British SMEs that provide cutting-edge technological advantages. For sub-contractors and technology partners within the UK space sector, SatVu’s shift from capability demonstration to commercial scaling signals a maturing market for sovereign thermal ISR data, particularly for applications involving the verification of operational activity and the protection of national infrastructure.

The strategic involvement of the NATO Innovation Fund underscores the relevance of SatVu’s technology to the wider Alliance, focusing on safeguarding economic activity and enhancing collective security. As SatVu builds out its constellation, the requirement for reliable ground segment services, data analytics, and secure communications will likely grow, providing further avenues for engagement within the defence industrial base. By establishing a UK-built, sovereign thermal capability, SatVu is positioned to become a critical partner for allied nations seeking independent intelligence in an increasingly contested global environment. The successful closure of this funding round ensures the execution of a clear path toward a multi-satellite constellation, reinforcing the UK’s leadership in high-resolution Earth observation.

Two repurposed marine vessel targets have been successfully delivered and installed at Holbeach Air Weapons Range (AWR) in Lincolnshire, enhancing live weapons training capability for both fixed wing and rotary wing air platforms. The project, delivered through a joint effort between the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), Landmarc and marine and construction specialists Topbond PLC, involved transporting the steel vessels from the River Crouch in Essex along the coastline to Holbeach, with specialist tug support provided from the Netherlands. The targets have been adapted specifically for military use and will support a diverse range of aircraft conducting live and inert weapons training, including pre-deployment preparation. Part of a Wider Training Estate Investment Programme The Holbeach installation sits within a broader DIO-led programme of training estate improvements across the UK. Brigadier Gavin Hatcher, DIO's Head of the UK Training Estate, pointed to parallel investments including new urban skills houses at Catterick and Larkhill, and training area improvements in Thetford, as evidence of sustained commitment to ensuring Defence can
