Babcock International Group has been awarded a one-year contract extension by the Ministry of Defence to continue the delivery of electro-mechanical training to the Defence College of Technical Training (DCTT). The extension, valued at approximately £22 million, ensures the continuity of essential training services for all three branches of the UK’s Armed Forces and presents ongoing opportunities within the defence training supply chain.

Under the terms of the Electro-mechanical Training Contract (EMTC2), Babcock will deliver a comprehensive suite of courses to around 5,000 students annually from the Royal Navy, British Army, and Royal Air Force. The scope of the contract is extensive, covering the design, planning, scheduling, and execution of training programmes. A significant component of the work involves providing crucial support for more than 2,500 individual pieces of military equipment, including complex weapon systems and armoured vehicles such as tanks. This requirement for equipment support may present sub-contracting opportunities for firms specialising in maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) of specific defence assets used for training purposes. The contract also includes the development of multi-media training aids, signalling a demand for digital learning solutions and educational technology.

Babcock has a well-established presence in this sector, having delivered training services to the DCTT for over a decade. The company employs more than 300 personnel dedicated to the contract at key defence establishments, including Ministry of Defence Lyneham and HMS Sultan. The extension reaffirms Babcock’s position as a key Tier 1 supplier to the MoD for technical training.

For the wider supply chain, this contract extension provides stability and indicates sustained investment in technical training capabilities. Jo Rayson, Managing Director for Babcock’s Training Business, noted the company’s focus on blending traditional training methods with innovative, evidence-based learning strategies to provide engaging and effective programmes. This approach suggests that opportunities may exist for specialist suppliers in areas such as simulation, virtual and augmented reality training systems, and bespoke e-learning content creation. Companies with expertise in these fields should view this contract as a key programme within the UK defence training landscape, with potential avenues for collaboration with the prime contractor.
