Councillors have lost a fight to stop an Ilkeston mill becoming 14 flats – leaving a £6,000 legal bill to come out of public coffers. They refused planning permission for the conversion of the Wood Street building, saying it would force neighbours to park well away from their homes. The matter went to an appeal which was decided by a government-appointed inspector. He visited the area and took written statements from the applicant and Erewash Borough Council.Planning officers had recommended that the project should be permitted but councillors rejected that advice. At a meeting of the planning committee, it was revealed that the inspector agreed with council officers and has ordered that the developer’s appeal costs should be paid by the authority.
