Previously deferred plans to transform a former Reg Vardy Toyota site in Newcastle into a mixed-use development comprising a hotel, gym and restaurant look set to be given the green light. The vacant tram shed on Westgate Road is subject to the application by Grainger Hotel, which proposes to extend and convert the property into a 40-bed venue.A restaurant, gym and both an above ground and underground car park are also proposed. The application was recommended for approval at a Newcastle City Council meeting in May before a decision was deferred to allow for the submission of a structural report, a detailed construction method statement and proposed images of the development.Grainger Hotel has since submitted the required documents.A report to the council has therefore concluded that the proposals “could achieve the architect’s requirements without the loss of the existing building if the appointed contractor is experienced and competent in carry out works of this nature”.While Newcastle City Council has again been recommended to approve the application, locals have voiced their concerns which include a disturbance to surrounding residents due to hotel use, Insufficient parking exacerbating an existing parking problem in the area and the potential disturbance from the hotel bar.The latest application comes five years after a previous scheme for a 48-bed hotel and two retail units at the site was approved. However, this was never implemented and has now expired.
