Plans have been lodged to develop a low carbon energy centre on an overspill car park at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) with the power generated set to be supplied to the venue, as well as having the “intention and capability” to serve Birmingham International Airport. The application was submitted to Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council by WSP Parsons Brinkerhoff on behalf of Imperative Energy Pendigo Ltd.The site, currently known as East Car Park, will be used to house nine containerised gas engines to provide electricity, some of which will generate combined heat and power. The proposals are a revised version of an outline application for a wood and solid biomass facility that was granted permission in 2012.
