Tadcaster’s bridge will be wider than the older one when it reopens after the repairs to the flood damage.A special meeting of Selby District council was held this afternoon to decide to give the plans the go-ahead.It would mean that the pavements on either side of the bridge would be 1.8 metres wide.Deputy Town Mayor Richard Sweeting said the council had made history today and as a Tadcaster resident born and bred he was highly delighted. He says wider pavements will make the bridge much safer.The county council will now press on with the project to repair the Grade II listed bridge and the widening works would be carried out at the same time.It is due to reopen in December.North Yorkshire County Council welcomes today’s approval for its planning application to widen Tadcaster Bridge.At a special planning meeting this afternoon, Selby District Council approved plans for increasing the carriageway width and widening the bridge footpaths to 1.8 metres as well as strengthening the bridge against future floods.The widening works will be carried out in conjunction with the repair works already underway on the bridge.
