Proposals for the extension of the Bristol Temple Quarter Enterprise Zone and the redevelopment of the derelict George and Railway site are set to be considered by Bristol City Council. Two reports will be considered at a meeting of the cabinet on 6 September 2016.The first set out plans to extend the enterprise zone area and extend the lifespan of the project. The second seeks approval for a joint venture with Skanska UK to redevelop the derelict George and Railway site close to the station as a business incubator, similar to that at the Engine Shed. The enterprise zone currently covers about 173 aces of land around Temple Meads station. Business rates are retained by the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and can be spent on infrastructure projects to support further growth. It is proposed that the project continue beyond 2032 and expand to include parts of Redcliffe and other nearby sites. The extra funding could be used to support the redevelopment of Temple Meads station. If approved by cabinet, the proposal will then be submitted by the LEP for consideration by government. Subject to approval the extension would come into effect in April 2017.The George and Railway site, which has been derelict for more than 25 years, would be sold to Skanska UK. It would then be redeveloped to house the second phase of the Engine Shed project.Bristol City Council would take a long term lease on the property and sub-let the space to an operator to provide incubator space for businesses.
