When a primary logistics provider failed to deliver, a defence manufacturing programme faced potential disruption due to delayed raw materials.

An international defence contractor required the urgent transport of 28 oversized plate steel sheets – essential inputs for production – across a distance of more than 1,100 miles into mainland Europe. With production timelines already under pressure, any delay risked halting manufacturing activity and impacting downstream schedules.

Situations like this are where Priority Freight’s time-critical expertise is routinely applied. Acting immediately, the team mobilised a coordinated logistics solution covering transport, customs and real-time visibility, ensuring full control from collection through to final delivery.

Each steel sheet presented significant transport challenges due to its size and weight. Under normal conditions, the load would require wide-load permits, introducing additional administrative delays that the programme could not accommodate.

Drawing on deep operational experience, Priority Freight engineered an alternative solution using hydraulic inclined trailers, allowing each sheet to be transported at a 45-degree angle. This removed the requirement for wide-load permits entirely, accelerating mobilisation while maintaining full compliance.

Despite a public holiday in Scotland, Priority Freight leveraged its established carrier network to secure immediate vehicle availability. The consignment was split across three dedicated trailers, each carrying 15 tonnes, with loading completed over a two-day window while documentation, customs pre-clearance and delivery scheduling were progressed in parallel.

Within 48 hours of the initial request, the convoy was in motion.

Throughout the journey, Priority Freight’s control centre teams maintained continuous oversight, with real-time tracking and proactive communication ensuring full visibility at every stage. This enabled precise coordination at destination, including the scheduling of lifting equipment and site readiness aligned to arrival.

The result was a fully controlled, compliant and accelerated delivery — completed eight days ahead of the contractual deadline.

Without rapid intervention, the delay of these materials would have halted production and created wider programme disruption. Instead, Priority Freight ensured continuity, demonstrating how agile planning and experienced execution protect critical manufacturing operations.

This is where Priority Freight teams excel – applying speed, expertise and control to deliver supply chain certainty in complex, high-pressure environments.
