A leading UK defence engineering organisation required specialist logistics support to transport a 57-tonne frigate engine from Germany to the UK as part of a critical defence programme.

As an out-of-gauge, high-value consignment, the oversized engine required careful planning, specialist equipment and secure handling throughout the journey.

Due to limited storage capacity at the original loading site in Germany, Priority Freight first arranged for the engine to be relocated to a secure indoor storage facility equipped with a gantry crane. This ensured the unit could be protected during the winter months and remained accessible for loading once the UK transport window opened.

Priority Freight then developed a detailed transport plan covering route selection, ferry scheduling, customs preparation and coordination with specialist lifting teams at the final delivery location in the UK.

Despite detailed planning, the operation faced several unexpected challenges. Severe winter weather across Germany and the UK caused multiple delays to the transport schedule. Heavy snowstorms blocked regional highways in Germany, while storm systems in the UK restricted the safe movement of out-of-gauge cargo.

Infrastructure constraints also limited available route options, as the engine’s height prevented access to certain motorways. At the same time, roadworks affecting the planned port access route delayed permit approvals and restricted alternative routes.

The size and weight of the engine also limited ferry options, requiring careful coordination to secure appropriate sailings and deck space.

Following the crossing to the UK, an enforced customs delay pushed the road departure later into the evening, creating a risk of missing the pre-arranged crane team required for unloading at the destination.

Priority Freight maintained continuous communication with all parties involved in the project, including the carrier, ferry operator, customs teams, crane contractor and the client’s engineering teams. This proactive coordination allowed the schedule to be adjusted several times while maintaining full visibility for all stakeholders.

Working closely with the delivery site and crane contractor, the team ultimately secured a revised unloading window on a Saturday morning, allowing the engine to be safely delivered and lifted into position.

Despite severe weather disruption, infrastructure restrictions and multiple rescheduling requirements, Priority Freight successfully coordinated the international transport of the high-value engine, ensuring it arrived safely and allowing the client’s programme to continue as planned.

This project demonstrates Priority Freight’s ability to manage complex, high-value defence logistics projects, even when operational conditions change.
