A grade II*-listed building in Liverpool deemed to be at risk by Historic England could be transformed into an innovation hub.The Wellington Rooms, in Mount Pleasant, dates from 1815. However, the city council-owned building has been vacant for about two decades.A report to go before Liverpool City Council’s cabinet on Friday (25 November 2016) has recommended that the property be turned into an innovation hub for new and established businesses.The authority will apply for Heritage Lottery and Historic England funding for the project.However, a series of urgent works are required at a cost of about £121,000. Historic England will fund about 50 per cent of the cost.The recommendation to turn The Wellington Rooms into an innovation hub follows a consultation, led by OMI Architects and comprising representatives from the University of Liverpool and Liverpool Science Park among others.The building, often referred to as The Irish Centre, was designed by Edmund Aiken.
