A proposal to build a three-storey block of flats on a green space in Cheriton, is set to be approved by councillors. In August, Shepway District Council unveiled plans to build the property, which would consist of six one-bedroom flats for social housing on a small piece of land on Roman Way in August. The authority says it devised the scheme having considered the “housing needs for the area”, but locals have raised concerns about building on the land and the impact it could have on local businesses. But the plans are set to be approved by SDC’s planning and licensing committee next Tuesday, with officers recommending planning permission is granted at the meeting.A number of those opposing the plan, which is currently at the consultation stage, accepted there is a need for social housing but said there are better locations elsewhere in the district.Fears about the impact on local businesses have also been raised – with some claiming the structure will be in front of two existing traders and thus reducing the possibility of passing trade.
