The UK’s Ajax armoured fighting vehicle programme has received a significant industry accolade, winning ‘Megaproject of the Year’ at the Global Project Controls Expo Awards.

The award recognises the robust project management and delivery frameworks now in place for one of the British Army’s most critical and complex equipment programmes. This recognition serves as a key indicator of the programme’s stability and progress, providing assurance to the extensive UK supply chain involved in its delivery.

The judges commended the Ajax programme for its success in uniting multiple organisations through a single, shared source of data, which has been instrumental in driving collaboration, transparency, and efficiency across the industrial partnership. They highlighted the programme’s strong governance and culture of innovation as setting a new benchmark for the management of high-stakes defence projects. This validation of its project controls is particularly noteworthy, reflecting the concerted effort by Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) and its partners to overcome earlier challenges and establish a resilient delivery model.

Shona Bates, the DE&S Ajax Delivery Team Leader, stated that the award is a testament to the dedication and collaborative expertise of the entire team. She noted how innovative project controls have been pivotal in creating transparency across a complex programme. The project is set to deliver 589 advanced armoured vehicles, representing a transformational step in the British Army’s modernisation and warfighting capability over the next decade.

For the UK defence industry, the Ajax programme remains a cornerstone of the land sector, safeguarding or creating approximately 4,100 jobs across a network of more than 230 UK-based businesses. Simon Pearson, the DE&S Combat Vehicles Portfolio Leader, commented on the resilience and determination shown by the team, often against a challenging backdrop. He emphasised that the programme will deliver a significant operational advantage to the armed forces. The award acknowledges the successful implementation of the complex systems and processes required to manage a programme of this scale, providing a positive outlook for the supply chain partners integral to its long-term success.
