Nearly 2 million UK veterans can now access a digital version of the HM Armed Forces Veteran Card via their smartphones. The initiative represents a significant step in modernising support services for the defence community whilst advancing the government’s digital transformation agenda.
The digital card, accessed through the GOV.UK One Login app, provides veterans with instant verification of their service status to unlock essential support services and commercial benefits. Technology Secretary Liz Kendall emphasised that the move forms part of national renewal plans to transform public services around citizens’ needs.
Key applications relevant to the defence sector include enabling veterans to register service backgrounds with GPs for programmes like Op COURAGE (mental health support) and Op RESTORE (physical health services). The card also facilitates access to Op FORTITUDE, the government’s secure referral system for veterans experiencing homelessness, and Op ASCEND, which connects former Service Personnel with veteran-friendly employers.
Minister for Veterans Louise Sandher-Jones also highlighted how the system removes barriers whilst maintaining security through biometric authentication: “This digital Veteran Card removes barriers and puts convenience back in their hands – whether they’re registering with a new GP, seeking housing support or simply getting a discount at their local museum. With 1.8 million veterans across the UK now able to benefit from this innovation, we’re making good on our commitment to modernise services for our veteran community.“
Currently available for in-person verification only, functionality will expand over coming months to include online use and full programmatic verification. The digital credential cannot yet be used for domestic air travel or Veteran Rail Cards, with these capabilities planned for rollout across the next year.
The Royal British Legion welcomed the initiative, noting the faster access to services represents a positive development for the Armed Forces community. The digital card is optional, with physical cards remaining available. It marks the first digital credential in what will become the GOV.UK Wallet, with digital driving licences to follow.
