Prime Minister, Theresa May and Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson, have welcomed the decision to formally recommend António Guterres as the next UN Secretary-General.

Mrs May spoke with Mr Guterres ahead of his formal confirmation, a Downing Street spokesperson said:

“The Prime Minister said the UK was delighted by his election.

“She emphasised the UK’s deep commitment to the United Nations, reiterating the message from her address to the UN General Assembly last month that now was the moment for countries to turn towards it and provide strong support for its vision and values, as a community of nations aiming to deliver security and reduce injustice across the globe.

“The Prime Minister said the UK stood ready to provide any support Mr Guterres required as he prepared to assume the role.”

Mr Guterres spoke of how new opportunities will be presented to the UK through Brexit, and the country would continue to play an important role said in the world, including in key global institutions like the UN.

The Foreign Secretary also praised the appointment, Mr Johnson said: “The United Nations Security Council has formally recommended António Guterres to the UN General Assembly as its next Secretary-General. He is an outstanding candidate with all the qualities and experience to do the job. I had the pleasure of speaking to António this morning to congratulate him on behalf of the United Kingdom and emphasised our commitment to working closely with him in the years ahead.

“I also want to pay tribute to the work of Ban Ki-moon in his nearly 10 years as UN Secretary-General. He has led the United Nations with dignity and commitment, guiding its efforts to help those most in need and placing respect for human rights at the heart of its agenda.

“I am confident that António Guterres will continue to build on these foundations, providing the leadership required to steer the UN through the many challenges facing our world, not least the crisis in Syria. I hope that the General Assembly can move quickly to accept this recommendation so that António can begin his preparation for this vital.”
