Project Background
A programme of works are required to ensure D lock remains safe to operate as both a transit lock and dry dock to support the operation capabilities of the HM Naval Base, Portsmouth. The overall aim of this project is to renovate D lock, addressing all the concerns raised from the last structural appraisal report/remedial civils work(s) required. D Lock is located between the tidal basin and 3 Basin, in Area 2 of the Dockyard, with an East / West orientation, on the North side of C Lock. It was originally built in 1914. The lock is approximately 260m long, 37m wide and 17m deep. The lock is essentially a very large mass concrete retaining structure. The work package will consist of upper wall brickwork repair, silt removal and safe disposal, caisson groove repair, Alter & wall repair, access & escape stairs including handrail remedial repair, floor & plinth repairs and sonar pit reinstatement. D Lock will be dry for a period of circa 2 years to allow for all civil work including new caisson and penstocks replacement. Budget cost for civil work: circa £2m -£3m
