4. Description: Open Competition for the supply and installation of a waterjet cutter and an ongoing support package for the machine.
Core requirements:
– A waterjet cutter with:
o Minimum working area on machine bed of 4m by 2.5m
o Maximum working area on machine bed of 5m by 4.5m
o A full five axis cutting head with A-axis movement of: ±91°
o Vertical travel of the cutting head to be a minimum of 0.5m
o Vertical travel of the cutting head to be a maximum 1.5m
o Capable of cutting steel, up to thickness of 100mm
o Machine bed to be fully enclosed
o Machine bed enclosure is required to be a minimum height of 300mm
– Training sessions for operators, which coincides with installation of the machine (within a month of installation). This needs to be practical, in person training, suitable for four Dstl staff to attend, and we’d expect it to last for 2-5 days. Including, but not limited to: operation and maintenance of the machine, basic CAD/CAM and processing.
– An operating manual for the waterjet cutter, in either physical or digital form (PDF or Word compatible file types only).
– The install team and any visiting engineers for ongoing support to be UK nationals.
– Machine needs to work within the following pressure parameters, or come with a suitable closed loop system built in:
o Flow at Outlet = 15 Litres per minute
o System pressure = 2.8 – 3.0 Bar
Additional requirements:
– Machine bed enclosure to have a desirable height of 1000mm
– An ongoing support package including; software updates, callouts, repairs, troubleshooting, and annual maintenance checks.
– The ongoing support package needs to have a duration of 3 years.
– Delivery and installation to be before end of April 2023.
Clarification questions and responses:
1. To be able to cut steel (thickness 100 mm), you need a high-pressure pump from 3500 – 4000 bars. Why did you indicate is system pressure of 2.8 – 3.0 bars?
The 2.8 – 3.0 bars is the water pressure of the building supply. We did not specify a pressure for the machine only a thickness it can cut.
2. Full enclosure;- The topside of the Water jet cutter cannot be enclosed because there is a high pressure tube from the pump to the cutting head that moves up and down. The high pressure tube is about 3.5 metres tall. Sometimes it gets to the ceiling. Can you consider an open top end while the other four sides are fully enclosed.
We do not expect the top of the machine to be covered only the sides with a minimum height of 300mm.
3. 15 litres / min? If you want to cut a steel of thickness 100 mm and above, the water jet must be strong enough to cut the material. Hence it has to be very thin and quick. Normally, the water jet from the cutting head should be only 3.7 litres/min, the maximum is only 6 litres / min and this produce an Orifice of 0.45 mm. so why 15 litres / min?
15 litres/min is the building supply. This was highlighted to ensure the machine could work with this building supply as it is the maximum we can provide not what we require it
