Started in 2008, GROW is a small charity working with communities to improve health, wellbeing and social connections via community gardening. It’s as much about growing community as it is about growing food and flowers. We try to bring those who may be isolated, suffering with mental or physical health issues, or those who just want to spend a bit more time outdoors together, all while enriching the local area. Currently, we have two gardens – one at The Waterworks in North Belfast, and one at Camberwell Court (Newington Housing Association). In addition to our weekly sessions, we hold training, community events and outreach.
Grow’s key areas of work:
Supporting mental and physical wellbeing through our weekly community gardening groups; promoting the benefits of being in nature, organic growing and food, and a safe social space.
Encouraging access to safe green spaces for isolated and marginalised communities, primarily families seeking asylum and refugees.
Training and development of our volunteers and connected groups to support the work of Grow, build capacity, encourage off-shoots and share knowledge in social and therapeutic horticulture, mental health, and organic community gardening.
Reaching out to local community organisations to offer partnered garden use for events, groups, learning, engagement, and building strong community connections and cohesiveness.
Our shared culture and values:
At Grow working together is the foundation for all we do. We aim to create opportunities for connection to others, to nature and ourselves by creating and sustaining safe garden spaces. Ultimately we want to contribute to making the community we live in a better place for everyone and our work is underpinned by shared culture and values including:
inclusivity
collaborative design
promoting & celebrating equality & diversity
openness
shared learning
local connections
environmental protection
food security & right to food
care & attention
creation of safe spaces
Depending on suitable funding being secured, the Freelance Session and Support Workers may;
Support Grow workers in weekly group gardening sessions or other events
Support Grow’s volunteer training and development
Provide weekly childcare (one morning per week)
Deliver a nature/ outdoor based children’s programme
Help develop and support Grow’s social media and marketing platforms
Develop and deliver fundraising initiatives alongside volunteers
This is not an exhaustive list; and Grow welcomes new ideas and suggestions for our programme. Following appointment, a Service Level Agreement and plan of work will be agreed with the Growing Communities Co-Ordinator.
Grow reserves the right to hold interviews as part of the appointments process if deemed necessary. Access NI checks will be essential for anyone working with children or vulnerable adults.
