Plans have been revealed to win a world-class handball and community centre in Dublin. The proposal, drawn up by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), is part of a wider masterplan to breathe new life into the Sackville Avenue area of Ballybough which also includes new housing and the demolition of the Croke Villas. The National Handball and Community Centre would be managed by a partnership arrangement between the GAA and the local community and handball centre members, after a lengthy mediation process chaired by former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern. The project still requires planning permission, which is to be sought “in the near future”.Ahern said the Sackville Avenue area of Ballybough “desperately needs” renovating.
