The Chapter of Durham Cathedral is seeking to appoint an experienced contractor to deliver the main contract works for the new nave lobbies project at Durham Cathedral which represents the final part of the open treasures project.
The works will likely comprise the creation of 2nr glazed lobbies to the North and South entrances to the Cathedral Nave including new foundations, ramps, associated M&E alterations, specialist lighting installations and conservation of historic carved stonework and conservation of the 12th century doors.
It is proposed that new structural glass lobbies will appear like “exhibition display cases”, enclosing the entire carved stone Romanesque portals to the North and South doors. Sloped floor access will be required from the North Lobby down to church floor level.

II.2.4) Description of the procurement
The Chapter of Durham Cathedral is seeking to appoint an experienced contractor to deliver the main contract works for the new nave lobbies project at Durham Cathedral which represents the final part of the open treasures project.
The Chapter of Durham cathedral intends to follow a restricted procurement procedure for the appointment of the main contractor which will involve the following stages:
— pre-qualification questionnaire,
— invitation to tender stage,
— contract award.
The construction works will likely comprise the creation of 2nr glazed lobbies to the North and South entrances to the Cathedral Nave including new foundations, ramps, associated M&E alterations, specialist lighting installations and conservation of historic carved stonework and conservation of the 12th century doors.
It is proposed that new structural glass lobbies will appear like “exhibition display cases”, enclosing the entire carved stone Romanesque portals to the North and South doors. Sloped floor access will be required from the North Lobby down to church floor level.
The site is within Durham Cathedral which is the focal point of the World Heritage Site of Durham City Centre. The Cathedral is just off Palace Green. The Cathedral is to remain open during the works and as the site is within a “live” environment.
The project is funded by Chapter of Durham Cathedral, Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), Antioch Settlement, Friends of Durham Cathedral, Garfield Weston Foundation, Hobson Charity, Sir John Priestman Charity Trust, Fidelity UK Foundation, Catherine Cookson Charitable Trust, Allchurches Trust Limited.
