Filtronic plc has secured a significant contract with a major European defence prime contractor for the next phase of a long-standing electronic sensor programme. The Sedgefield-based designer and manufacturer of advanced radio frequency (RF) communications technology received an Authorisation to Proceed (ATP) valued at approximately £7 million, allowing work to commence immediately. The total value of the contract is anticipated to reach £11 million over its two-year duration, representing a substantial opportunity for the UK’s defence supply chain.

The programme will be delivered from Filtronic’s new, purpose-built microelectronics facility in Sedgefield, County Durham. This advanced manufacturing site is equipped with automated processes and operates under stringent security protocols, positioning it to handle high-volume production of sophisticated RF modules.

The facility is designed to serve not only the defence and aerospace markets but also the space and telecommunications infrastructure sectors, indicating a broad scope for potential sub-contractor and supplier engagement. This investment underscores a strategic move to address the increasing demand for sovereign manufacturing capabilities and the development of resilient, UK-based supply chains, a key priority for the Ministry of Defence and its international partners.

Nat Edington, Chief Executive Officer, said: “This award demonstrates long-term customer confidence in Filtronic’s technology and expertise. As nations seek to strengthen sovereign capability and secure critical supply chains, Filtronic is uniquely positioned to deliver advanced RF solutions at scale. Our continued investment in automation and secure facilities underpins our commitment to supporting defence primes with reliable, high-performance technologies.”

The selection of a UK supplier for this critical European defence programme highlights the competitive advantage of British technological expertise in the global market. For companies operating within the UK defence supply chain, this development signals a growing emphasis on securing reliable and high-performance technologies from trusted domestic partners.

The contract reinforces Filtronic’s position as a key supplier of mission-critical RF solutions and provides a clear example of the opportunities available for specialised UK firms that invest in advanced manufacturing facilities and security-cleared operations. The programme’s focus on long-term supply and advanced sensor technology presents potential avenues for businesses with expertise in electronic components, materials, and associated manufacturing services to engage with a prominent player in the national and international defence sector.
