West Midlands-based manufacturer Griffin-Woodhouse Limited (GWEC) has secured a significant, long-term contract to act as a key supplier to Briggs Marine Contractors for the provision of mooring equipment to the Ministry of Defence (MoD). The agreement is the largest single contract in GWEC’s 230-year history and solidifies its position within the UK’s critical naval support supply chain.

Under the terms of the agreement, GWEC will supply essential mooring chains and accessories to Briggs Marine, the prime contractor recently awarded the MoD’s contract for the Supply and Maintenance of Authority Moorings, Markers and Targets. The equipment provided by GWEC will be utilised for both the maintenance and renewal of vital mooring infrastructure supporting Royal Navy operations. The scope of the contract is extensive, covering moorings for a range of naval assets including submarines, warships, and vessels of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA). The support will be delivered across key strategic locations, including facilities in the UK, Gibraltar, Cyprus, the Ascension Islands, and the Falkland Islands.

This contract represents a continuation of GWEC’s long-standing relationship with UK defence. The company was previously a direct supplier to the Royal Maritime Auxiliary Service (RMAS) and later served as a subcontractor to Serco Marine under the Future Provision of Marine Services (FPMS) and Continued Provision of Marine Services (CPMS) contracts. This extensive experience will be critical in delivering the high standards required under the new agreement with Briggs Marine. The contract underscores the importance of specialised SMEs within the defence sector’s supply chain, providing opportunities for established suppliers to contribute to national security programmes.

David Timmington, Managing Director of GWEC, noted the contract is an important part of the company’s continued growth, complementing its work in the commercial offshore energy sectors. Iain Ross, Director of Port and Marine Services at Briggs Marine, commented that continuing to work with GWEC will be invaluable in ensuring the successful delivery of the critical programme of works to the Ministry of Defence. The collaboration between the two companies will leverage GWEC’s technical expertise to maintain the high level of service and equipment reliability expected by the MoD for its global maritime operations.
