UK and Germany sign major contract for next-generation bridging equipment

A landmark reciprocal procurement contract between the United Kingdom and Germany will deliver next-generation battlefield mobility to the British Army while creating a significant export opportunity for the UK defence supply chain. The agreement, managed by the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR), reinforces the deepening industrial and military partnership established under the Trinity House and Kensington Agreements.

The most direct benefit for UK industry stems from Germany’s commitment to purchase the General Support Bridge (GSB) system, which is manufactured by KNDS UK in Stockport. This export deal supports approximately 300 jobs and highlights a key opportunity for sub-contractors involved in specialised engineering, manufacturing, and component supply. The GSB system enables military engineers to construct a 46-metre bridge, capable of supporting all NATO main battle tanks including the British Army’s future Challenger 3, in under 90 minutes. This planned acquisition provides a clear pathway for UK firms to integrate into the German military’s ground-based logistics and engineering supply chain.

As part of the joint contract, the UK will invest £200 million to procure 36 M3 EVO amphibious bridging vehicles from General Dynamic European Land Systems (GDELS) in Germany. These systems are scheduled to enter service in the early 2030s, replacing the British Army’s current M3 Amphibious Rigs, which have been in service for approximately 30 years. The M3 EVO represents a significant capability enhancement, designed to carry heavier combat vehicles and improve interoperability with NATO allies. These new assets will be operated by the Royal Engineers within the joint UK-German Amphibious Engineer Battalion.

For the UK supply chain, the introduction of the M3 EVO platform will create long-term opportunities in through-life support, maintenance, repair, and overhaul. Companies with expertise in vehicle integration, platform sustainment, and training solutions should monitor the programme’s progress as the Ministry of Defence develops its support strategy for the new fleet. This bilateral agreement exemplifies a new model of defence cooperation, where national investment in foreign military equipment is balanced by export orders for domestic industry, creating a mutually beneficial framework for both nations’ defence industrial bases.
