Investment in new infrastructure at Weeton Barracks in Lancashire is improving living standards for junior soldiers while enhancing operational sustainability across the Army estate.
A new Single Living Accommodation (SLA) block is nearing completion, providing 69 en-suite bedspaces with communal kitchens, dining areas, utility rooms, storage, and lounges. The building integrates rooftop solar panels, air source heat pumps, and a SMART energy management system, designed to optimise efficiency based on usage patterns. Soldiers are expected to move in before the end of the year.
The project was delivered under the Army’s SLA Programme by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) with construction contractor Volumec. In parallel, a new solar array of more than 1,600 panels has been installed on surplus land, supplying over one-third of the site’s energy requirements. Funded under Project Prometheus and delivered by DIO in partnership with Mitie and Custom Solar, the installation reduces energy costs and lowers the carbon footprint of the site.
Major General Richard Clements CBE, Director Basing and Infrastructure, said the investments demonstrate a commitment to service personnel welfare while modernising the Army estate. “These projects enhance energy resilience, support operational capability, and improve the environments where soldiers live, work and train,” he said.
The MOD is continuing investment across the North West, including a new 53,000 sq ft office for Defence Business Services in Blackpool’s Talbot Gateway project. The facility will accommodate up to 1,100 staff and is part of the £5.1 billion Defence Estate Optimisation Portfolio, which is delivering modern and sustainable accommodation and facilities for more than 100,000 military and civilian personnel nationwide.
These projects provide clear opportunities for suppliers and contractors working on accommodation, renewable energy, and technical infrastructure projects across the MOD estate.
