Devon-based defence engineering company Supacat has secured its first export order from the Czech Ministry of Defence for 18 High Mobility Transporter (HMT) Mk3 Extenda vehicles, known in the UK as the Jackal 3. The order will equip the Czech Armed Forces’ 601st Special Forces Group, replacing its ageing fleet of Land Rovers and providing a step-change in operational capability.
The HMT Extenda, capable of speeds up to 120 kph and configurable as either a 4×4 or 6×6 platform, will be formally showcased at next week’s Defence & Security Equipment International (DSEI) exhibition in London. Designed for versatility, the vehicle combines exceptional off-road performance with modular adaptability, enabling users to re-role the base platform with mission-specific modules and protection systems throughout its service life.
The 601st Special Forces Group is the Czech Republic’s elite rapid reaction unit, responsible for strategic reconnaissance, offensive operations and support missions. Supacat’s system will enhance its mobility, survivability and firepower, offering flexibility aligned with the demands of modern special operations.
This contract follows a series of significant UK MoD orders in recent years, demonstrating how domestic investment has underpinned Supacat’s export success. With its battle-proven track record in Afghanistan and global service with allied special forces, the HMT platform has become a benchmark for high-performance light armoured mobility.
Supacat’s Czech partner, LPP, will deliver a substantial share of the industrial participation, ensuring benefits for the local economy. Miroslav Zizka, Managing Director of LPP, described the order as “a win for both the Czech armed forces and Czech industry,” citing Supacat’s confidence in entrusting Czech industry with key roles.
Phil Applegarth, Director and Head of Supacat, said the order reinforced the platform’s reputation: “This announcement confirms that the Extenda delivers not only combat performance but also the right partnerships. Trusted by British and international special forces since the early 2000s, the platform continues to evolve to meet the demands of the modern battlefield.”
Nick Ames, CEO of Supacat’s parent company SC Group, highlighted the wider implications: “This is terrific news, both for Supacat and the UK’s defence industrial base. It reflects the clear impact of the Land Industrial Strategy in supporting exports, strengthening sovereign capabilities and ensuring British design and technology remain highly competitive in international markets.”
The contract underlines the growing global demand for the HMT family of vehicles and demonstrates the ability of UK defence firms to leverage domestic procurement into wider international opportunities.
