Plans have been revealed for major expansion plans at the Lincolnshire RAF base which is set to be the home of the Red Arrows from 2022.RAF Waddington has been earmarked for a new operations facility, including a new aircraft hanger, as well as accommodation for up to 1,000 people – which equates to three squadrons.The proposals also include space for aircraft parking and runway access as well as maintenance capabilities.The two buildings proposed would have a combined floorspace of 705,036 sq ft.About 428 car parking spaces would also be provided.According to planning documents, about 240 additional personnel would operate from the site.The plans have been revealed in an environmental impact assessment screening opinion which has been submitted to North Kesteven District Council.A formal application could be published in the coming months.Submitted by Boeing Defence UK, the scheme is called Project Larson.RAF Waddington first opened as a Royal Flying Corps training station in 1916.It is now one of the RAF’s busiest stations as the hub of UK intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance and the main operating base for airborne intelligence aircraft and systems.Approximately 3,500 service personnel, civil servants and contractors are employed at the base.
