PHE is seeking to purchase 3 Rapid containment kits. Due to the high virulence of many pathogens in emerging epidemics it is essential for PHE microbiology to purchase a containment facility to provide a safe working environment for microbiological diagnostics and research. This is facilitated by the glove box, a portable isolator providing a safe working environment which allows the safe handling of dangerous pathogens such as Ebola. PHE therefore intend to purchase 3 Rapid Containment Kits.
Safety.
— Glovebox should operate at negative pressure between -50 and -75 Pa (in accordance with HSG 280 04/2015: ‘Guidance for licence holders on the containment and control of specified animal pathogens SAPO regulations),
— Alarm to indicate when negative pressure is out of specification,
— HEPA filtered/ optional chemical filter for formaldehyde/ammonia gas safe exhaust extraction,
— Chemically resistant to chlorine, ammonia and formaldehyde,
— Safe and rapid transfer port or ports facilitated by visual or audible warning to prevent accidental opening and containment breach,
— In-field leak testing facility (Certified leak testing ISO 14644),
— Clear panels: Must be able to see inside the cabinet from most angles to allow a good view inside for both operator and ‘buddy’,
— Minimum work space of 50cm x 80cm,
— Electrical supply within cabinet for laboratory equipment (microfuge, hotblock) and formaldehyde disinfection kettle.
Deployable:
— Portability: Must comply to Aircraft cargo luggage restrictions:<31kg including flight case and within normal cargo hold luggage dimensions,
— Ergonomics: Clear view inside box. Ergonomic placement of glove ports and design dimensions must consider user comfort. Evidence of low fatigue during extended use required. The glove boxes are used for several hours at a time and maintaining a level of user comfort is of paramount importance to prevent work-related upper limb disorders. This is of major importance as multiple cases of WRULD when operating Class III cabinets and glove boxes have been recorded both inside and outside occurred at PHE when using containment equipment,
— Power: Battery and mains to ensure functionality is maintained during intermittent or absent power supply,
— Durability: Must be robust for frequent transport and extended use in the field,
— Parts: Emergency procurement of replacement parts may be necessary. Parts must be available in good time to ensure continuity of service in remote areas.
Field -tested.
It is an absolute requirement that any glovebox has been extensively field tested to ensure it meets all deployable requirements and can be operated to the stringent safety parameters defined above for long durations. Documentation to support its use in the field must be evidenced to provide assurance that Safe systems that are fit for purpose.
