Dozens of beach huts could soon be erected on Bexhill seafront with tenants able to sell their licences with the council set to make more than £33,000 a year.Rother District Council’s cabinet will discuss proposals to reinstate 30 huts at Glyne Gap, build 16 to 24 below Galley Hill, more along West Parade and lease 12 vacant spots on East Parade. The current waiting list may be scrapped with the new huts offered to them, and licence holders would be able to transfer their lease with a council fee attached. The recommendations come from a beach hut working group discussed at an overview and scrutiny committee meeting on October 17.The working group proposed seeking planning permission for the reinstatement of 30 beach huts at Glyne Gap, which would produce £15,000 a year, based on current fees. The suitability of below Galley Hill would be investigated with an eye to create 16 to 24 new huts, making £8,000-12,000 per year. Additional huts would be explored on West Parade and 12 empty plots on East Parade would be licensed, earning £6,000 a year. The committee decided against putting 12 to 25 huts on Beaulieu Road due to inadequate parking and toilets. People would also be allowed to transfer their beach hut licences on the open market and terminate the waiting list. Although the group appreciated the reputational risk for the council and over development fears, the new huts would be offered to those who have been waiting and the planning committee would determine each site on its merits. The cabinet meets on Monday (November 7). Don’t miss out on all the latest breaking news where you live.
