Plans to refurbish a grade II-listed historic Durham property into an “unbelievable” hotel, restaurant and cocktail bar represent a “great opportunity” for the city, a director at the company behind the project has told Insider.Ramsay Duff of Maven Capital also discussed the complexities of the project and revealed why Shire Hall was chosen as the location for the luxury venue.The Old Shire Hall at Old Elve was built in 1896 and has lain empty since Durham University vacated in 2012.Proposals were approved in late 2015 to transform the property into an 81-bedroomed Hotel Indigo. Included in the project will be the establishment of an MPW Steakhouse Bar & Grill.Revised plans were recently submitted to Durham County Council outlining the final layout of the scheme.Ramsay Duff, investment director at Maven Capital Partners, which acquired the property in April, has now spoken to Insider about the project which he said “has not been especially problematic”.
